Intermediary between\u00a0several speaker<\/h3>

Liaison<\/em> interpreting consists of an interpreter who serves as an intermediary between more than one person, i.e. the interpreter translates for several speakers or participants, there may be one person with a small group, or there may be two small groups speaking different languages. In the case of a large group, we recommend that you always have several liaison interpreters. The interpreter must have full knowledge of both languages and must be familiar with the culture of both participants in order to be able to extrapolate the situations. This type of interpreting is usually used on trade missions, tourist tours, visits to factories and facilities, business meetings, trade fairs, delicate negotiations, interviews, etc.<\/p>

General command of both working languages<\/h3>

It is essential that the interpreter has a general command of both working languages, since in this mode notes are not taken despite the fact that they are developed in a bidirectional way. The interpreter usually has documentary material that has been provided by the client corresponding to the subject matter to be dealt with in the interpretation, since most situations are more or less delimited. In this type of interpreting, the use of equipment (booths, headsets, as was necessary in the case of simultaneous interpreting) is not necessary. Rather this is a fairly spontaneous, flexible and relaxed form of communication.\u00a0<\/p>

The liaison interpreter plays a key role<\/a> in this type of interpretation as he or she is present in the same space as the people who want to communicate with each other in different languages and must adjust his or her interpretation to the non-verbal features of the interlocutors’ speeches and also take into account the relationship that has been established between them. They usually lack technical equipment and must avoid making non-verbal gestures such as body language during their involvement in the interpretation, since gestures and facial expressions can be very important in this type of meeting. Here participants are face to face, and it is important that the interpreter knows how to choose the right words<\/a> and twists at all times and has a good knowledge of the specialized lexicon and the communicative and cultural situation.\u00a0<\/p>

The interpreter must have the ability to identify the relationship between the participants, as there may be a relationship of inequality or power between them, in addition to the cultural characteristics present.
