Therefore, the modern Latin alphabet is based on the Roman alphabet, plus the spellings J, U, W and the lower case of each letter (it should be remembered that in ancient times only capital letters were used):<\/p><p>A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z<\/p><p>To these spellings should be added the variants specific to each language (such as the \u00d1 in Spanish or the \u00c7 in Catalan).<\/p><p>However, the truth is that the Romans did not invent the alphabet, but merely adopted existing writing systems and adapted them to their needs.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>The Phoenician alphabet and the Greco-Latin alphabet<\/strong><\/p><p>The Latin alphabet is an indirect derivative, through Etruscan, of one of the Greek alphabet types; and, in turn, the Greeks adopted the alphabet of the Phoenicians, who are actually credited with the spread of alphabetic writing.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-da03078 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"da03078\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_ha_eqh_enable&quot;:false}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-2392d31\" data-id=\"2392d31\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b7a10f5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"b7a10f5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fasttxt.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/dedos-cuenta-llenado-periodista-informe-min-scaled.jpg\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-4827b60 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"4827b60\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_ha_eqh_enable&quot;:false}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-1df032c\" data-id=\"1df032c\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-eadcf2c elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"eadcf2c\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_ha_eqh_enable&quot;:false}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-80cfbc6\" data-id=\"80cfbc6\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a189dab elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a189dab\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Among the Canaanite states, Phoenicia was the first to make extensive use of the alphabet, since, due to their intense commercial activity in the Mediterranean, the Phoenicians felt the need to create a more simplified writing system in which they could easily record the information related to their transactions.<\/p><p>Greek, on the other hand, had already been written during Mycenaean times in what is known as &#8216;linear B&#8217;, but it was not an alphabet as such, but a syllabary.<\/p><p>These are the capital letters of the classical Greek alphabet:<\/p><p>A, B, \u0393, \u0394, E, Z, H, \u0398, I, K, \u039b, M, N, \u039e, O, \u03a0, \u03a1, \u03a3, \u03a4, Y, \u03a6, X, \u03a8, \u03a9<\/p><p>However, the Greek alphabet presented numerous variants, largely due to the territorial disintegration of the Hellenes, and the first alphabets appeared in the Magna Graecia, that is to say, in southern Italy.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h2><strong>The alphabet in Italy: the Etruscan alphabet<\/strong><\/h2><p>Alphabetic writing entered Italy through Magna Graecia, and it was the Etruscans who were the first to adopt it. The <em>Marsiliana Tablet<\/em>, an ivory writing tablet dating from the mid-7th century B.C., is the best known example of the Etruscan alphabet:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-2504701 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"2504701\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_ha_eqh_enable&quot;:false}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-1801db3\" data-id=\"1801db3\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-95ac51d elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"95ac51d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fasttxt.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Imagen1.png\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-d6a53e9 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"d6a53e9\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_ha_eqh_enable&quot;:false}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-a559871\" data-id=\"a559871\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-18c8446 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"18c8446\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Romans adopted the Etruscan alphabet, so that the first Roman alphabet was strongly influenced by the Etruscan particularities:<\/p><ul><li>The letter X represented a double consonant [ks].<\/li><li>Etruscan, unlike Latin, did not distinguish the voiceless stops \/p, t, k\/ from the voiced stops \/b, d, g\/, so the letters B, D, G were initially abandoned.<\/li><li>The digamma (\u03dc), inherited from the Greek, represented the sound [w].<\/li><li>The sound [k] could be indicated with three different spellings: C, K, Q. In the origin of the Latin script, C + E\/I; K + A; Q + O\/U were used. In archaic Latin it was still written as <em>virco<\/em> instead of <em>virgo<\/em> (girl).<\/li><li>The alphabet ended with the letter X.<\/li><li>It was written from right to left.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><h2><strong>Evolution of the Latin alphabet<\/strong><\/h2><p>From the Roman adoption of the Etruscan alphabet, a series of changes in the writing system took place until we arrived at what we now know as the Latin alphabet.<\/p><p><u>Initial changes<\/u>: (5th century B.C.)<\/p><ul><li>The Romans recovered the B and D of the Greek alphabet, since Latin, unlike Etruscan, does distinguish between voiceless and voiced stops.<\/li><li>Regarding the sound [f], the Etruscans already used the \u03dc for the sound [w], so they chose to use a double spelling for the first sound: FH. Eventually, the second element disappeared and the digamma alone (\u03dc) came to represent the sound [f].<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><u>Change 2<\/u>: elimination of the Z (6th-3rd centuries B.C.)<\/p><ul><li>Neither Latin nor Etruscan had a [dz] or [ts] sound, which was what Z represents in Greek. Therefore, Z was originally used in Latin to represent the sound of a sonorous \/s\/: [z].<\/li><li>However, since the distinction between voiced \/s\/ and voiceless \/s\/ was not useful in Latin, and the S spelling ended up being used for both.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><u>Change 3<\/u>: abandonment of K and Q and creation of G (3rd century B.C.)<\/p><ul><li>Using three graphic symbols, C, K, Q, for a single sound [k] was totally unproductive, so that C ended up imposing itself, roughly speaking, to all contexts.<\/li><li>The letter K was reserved for a few words <em>(kalendas)<\/em> and Q only before U <em>(loquor)<\/em>.<\/li><li>A symbol for the specific sound [g], that is, for the voiced velar stop, was therefore missing. Thus, in the middle of the 3rd century BC, a small stroke was added to the C to distinguish the spelling of the voiceless velar (C) from the voiced one (G).<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><u>Change 4<\/u>: introduction of Y, re-introduction of Z (1st century B.C.)<\/p><ul><li>Due to the Hellenistic influence and the desire to transcribe Greek terms, the need arose to introduce new letters into the alphabet.<\/li><li>Thus, Y was introduced to represent the sound of the Greek epsilon [y] (the German \u00fc), while Z was recovered for the sound of the Greek zeta [dz].<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><u>Change 5<\/u>: representation of the Greek Aspirates (1st century B.C.)<\/p><ul><li>During the Republican era in Rome, the Greek letters \u03a6, \u03f4, \u03a7, which represented the aspirated deaf sounds [f<sup>h<\/sup>, t<sup>h<\/sup>, k<sup>h<\/sup>], respectively, were represented in Latin by the letters P, T, C, as the Latin language did not have aspirated deaf phonemes.<\/li><li>However, from the 1st century B.C. onwards, under the influence of Hellenism, an H was added to the letters P, T, C to indicate that they came from Greek aspirated deaf, as in the case of the words<em> philologia, theologia <\/em>and<\/li><li>The pronunciation and notation of these aspirated consonants only became established in the cultured language.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-3742602 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"3742602\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_ha_eqh_enable&quot;:false}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-0e99359\" data-id=\"0e99359\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-086f320 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"086f320\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fasttxt.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/clarisse-meyer-jKU2NneZAbI-unsplash-min-scaled.jpg\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-f8fee05 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"f8fee05\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_ha_eqh_enable&quot;:false}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-dc0e555\" data-id=\"dc0e555\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-58aeedb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"58aeedb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><strong>Medieval and modern additions<\/strong><\/h2><p>Only three letters were added to the Latin alphabet in a post-Roman era: W, J and V.<\/p><p>The primitive form of W was a VV (double V) used in the 7th century by early Anglo-Saxon speakers to represent the sound of the Germanic semi-consonant [w], as it had no correspondence in the Romance languages.<\/p><p>Regarding the I\/J and U\/V distinction, Latin used I and U for both vowels [i, u] and semi-consonants [j, w].
