But, what is the iod? Well, the first thing to clarify is that, originally, the palatal nasal sound did not exist as a phoneme in Latin. However, with the passage of time, the atonic Latin short e and i became semiconsonants, giving rise to a multitude of phonetic alterations in the Latin phonological system. This process of change is known as palatalization, and one of its main consequences was the appearance of iod.

As the philologist and academic Rafael Lapesa explains in his work History of the Spanish language: “The iod, merging with the consonant that preceded it, palatalized it: muliere > mujer (woman); vinia > viña (vineyard)… Thus were born the palatal phonemes represented by ll and ñ in our current orthography, unknown in classical Latin and characteristic of Romance languages.»

The origin of the peculiarity

Having made this small phonetic note, we will now talk about the origin of the ñ in its spelling. Thus, the letter eñe exists as a graphic sign of the Spanish language long before the invention of the printing press: we have to go back to the Middle Ages to find the first notation of the eñe.

As we have already mentioned, both the palatal sound and the letter eñe are creations of the Romance languages, since they did not exist in Greek or Latin. Only N was available, which was reinforced with I, Y, G or another N for the representation of this phoneme. Thus, during the medieval period, when the different Romance languages were consolidated and spread throughout Europe, the evolution of the groups gn, nn or ni represented the palatal nasal.

On the other hand, in the areas of the Iberian Peninsula under Christian domination, there were already signs of this palatalization phenomenon as early as the 10th century. However, the Spanish preferred to use the nn group to represent the palatal consonant.

The birth of the letter ñ

However, since copyists tended to resort to numerous abbreviations in order, on the one hand, to make their task easier and, on the other, to save space (since the material from which the codices were made was quite expensive), the nn group began to be represented by the virgulilla, an orthographic sign that resembles a small wavy tilde (~) and is found at the top of a letter.
