In the history of the Galician language, there are figures who stand out for their tireless endeavour and commitment to their own culture without seeking recognition or praise.<\/span> Among them, the figure of An\u00edbal Otero \u00c1lvarez stands out, a Galician philologist whose life <\/span>unfolded<\/span> between a <\/span>profound love<\/span> for words and the weight of a convulsive period, marked by war, prison and silence; a man who dedicated his life to collecting the voices of his land and defending them even when everything seemed to push them into oblivion.<\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

An\u00edbal Otero was born in 1911 in Barcia, a small hamlet in the interior of Galicia.<\/span> From <\/span>a very young<\/span> age, Otero was <\/span>drawn to<\/span> the <\/span>study<\/span> of language, <\/span>a passion that<\/span> led him to study Philosophy and Letters at the Complutense University of Madrid.<\/span> While many young people in the turbulent 1930s marched under flags, he carried notebooks.<\/span> It was <\/span>during this period<\/span> that he took part in one of the most ambitious projects in Hispanic dialectology: th<\/span>e <\/span><\/span>Atlas <\/span>Lin<\/span>g\u00fc\u00edstico<\/span> de la Pen\u00ednsula Ib\u00e9rica<\/span><\/i><\/span> (ALPI), directed by Tom\u00e1s Navarro Tom\u00e1s and Ram\u00f3n Men\u00e9ndez Pidal.<\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The ALPI <\/span>represented<\/span> a quasi-quixotic adventure: it <\/span>sought<\/span> to document, with rigor, how people spoke in every corner of the peninsula<\/span>.<\/span> Otero<\/span> was assigned Galicia and northern Portugal, where he conducted field surveys with a meticulousness that still astounds us today.<\/span> Armed with a complex phonetic alphabet and a finely tuned ear, he interviewed farmers, <\/span>fishermen<\/span>, <\/span>elders<\/span>; he recorded how they named water, bread, wind.<\/span> Each word was a living fossil,<\/span> a trace of linguistic evolution<\/span>.<\/span> Otero was not just a word-gatherer: he was an interpreter of the intangible.<\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

From Philologist to \"Spy\": Prison and Survival<\/b>\u202f <\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

But language never exists in isolation. The convulsive political context <\/span>in which he carried out his research<\/span> soon turned Otero\u2019s work into a source of suspicion. <\/span>Thus, in August 1936, while carrying out his fieldwork in Portugal, Otero was arrested by the police of the <\/span>Salazarist<\/span> regime.<\/span>\u202f <\/span>They distrusted him because he carried notebooks with \u00abstrange\u00bb signs, notes in a technical alphabet unfathomable for those who arrested him.<\/span> It was certainly the international phonetic alphabet, but it looked like a cipher code.<\/span>\u202f\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Amid<\/span> the escalation of the war, he was accused of espionage and handed over to Franco’s authorities.<\/span> He was imprisoned, <\/span>court-martialled<\/span>,<\/span> and sentenced to death.<\/span> His crime: listening and writing down how the people of the countryside spoke.<\/span> He was saved, in part, by letters that his mother handed over to the judges: letters from Navarro Tom\u00e1s certifying that An\u00edbal was not a spy, but a linguist.<\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Despite the pardon, he <\/span>endured<\/span> five years in prison, some of them on the sinister island of San Sim\u00f3n, <\/span>converted by the regime into a concentration and extermination camp for<\/span> anti-Franco political prisoners.<\/span> He was released in 1941,<\/span> with no resources, no <\/span>recognition<\/span>,<\/span> and no real possibility of returning to his former life.<\/span> He had paid <\/span>a very high<\/span> price for his dedication to language.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

After his release from prison, Otero returned to his home village of Barcia.<\/span> He did not return to Madrid or to academic circles; nor did he continue to <\/span>participate<\/span> in the ALPI, which c<\/span>ontinued <\/span>without him.<\/span> He became an almost ascetic figure: a sage retired to the countryside, surrounded by the very words he had once studied, but now as a peasant rather than a philologist.<\/span> The traumatic experience in prison left an indelible mark on his mind.<\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

However, he did not completely abandon his vocation.<\/span> Since his retirement, he continued his research in silence.<\/span> He compiled vocabulary, reflected on etymologies<\/span>,<\/span> and <\/span>wrote<\/span> articles that appeared in specialised journals such as <\/span><\/span>Cuadernos<\/span> de <\/span>Estudios<\/span> Gallegos<\/span><\/i><\/span>.<\/span> His study of Galician and Portuguese voices <\/span>\u2014<\/span>both synchronic and diachronic<\/span>\u2014<\/span> places him today as one of the great pioneers of Galician dialectology.<\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Today, his name is not among the most famous<\/span> people<\/span> in Hispanic philology.<\/span> But for those who know the history of ALPI and the beginnings of Galician dialectology, An\u00edbal Otero is a key figure.<\/span> His work forms part of the foundations <\/span>upon which Galician linguistic standardisation in the 20th century was built<\/span>.<\/span> In addition, his field notebooks, notes<\/span>,<\/span> and articles are still cited, <\/span>consulted<\/span>,<\/span> and highly valued by specialists.<\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In 2011, the University of Vigo dedicated a monographic issue of the journal <\/span><\/span>Hesperia<\/span> <\/span><\/em>to him.<\/span> It was a <\/span>modest<\/span> act of justice: his texts were re-<\/span>examined<\/span>, his life was contextualised<\/span>,<\/span> and the letters that saved him from the firing line were published for the first time.<\/span> Gradually, Otero regained his voice.<\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
