Consecutive interpretation services

Consecutive interpreting consists of reworking the speaker’s speech by means of note-taking by the interpreter. In this modality the interpreter has a little more time to listen to the speech and, later, to do the interpretation, even so, the reworking of the speech is always done immediately. In these cases, the interpreter is always next to the speaker and facing the audience. This type of interpreting does not require headphones or interpreter booths, as is the case with simultaneous interpreting. However, it is much more complex than simultaneous interpretation. Although the interpreter will always be at the speaker’s side, it is important that the attention is focused solely on the speaker. Therefore, it is recommended that interpreters dress discreetly and appropriately for each type of event in which consecutive interpretation services are provided.

CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETATION: courses, lectures, book presentations, conferences, inaugurations

Conferences, courses, trials

This type of interpreting usually takes place in telephone conferences, courses, trials, lectures, interviews, book presentations, bilateral meetings, conferences, political negotiations, press conferences, inaugurations and, certain international events and congresses. Normally, the speaker stops their speech briefly for 1 to 5 minutes so that the interpreter can proceed to communicate the full idea of what they have said. The interpreter is characterized by a great memory and a great capacity for concentration. In this situation, the interpreter will take notes using a strategy of symbols so that later the memory of what they have to interpret will be much easier and more fluid. This note-taking, that is, this strategy is key to reconstructing the speaker’s speech, since most of the time interpreters have to wait quite a long time for the speaker to finish the speech. Note-taking requires in-depth knowledge of abbreviations, symbols and, of course, the ability to summarize, since the information has to be collected in the shortest possible time. And, finally, the capacity for analysis in this process is one of the most important, as they have to be able to summarize and not forget any of the speaker’s details. As for the ability to concentrate, the interpreter cannot be distracted for a single second; his or her attention has to be focused on the speaker’s message.
