Writing advertising content. Copywriting

Undoubtedly, language is the most powerful tool for communication between human beings, and this premise can be perfectly extrapolated to the field of advertising, where communicative competence is of crucial importance.

In this sense, advertising plays a very relevant role as an instrument of social communication, since it introduces models of behavior, attitude and way of life, as well as orienting and generating needs among the population.

Likewise, copywriting occupies a key place in the field of digital marketing; in fact, in most cases a specialist in the field is required to take charge of the writing of these contents.

Copywriting is characterized by a strong persuasive nature, since its main objective is to capture the consumer’s attention and encourage them to buy a certain product or service.

Advertising and marketing

We usually refer to ‘advertising’ as the set of techniques that attempt to influence human behavior by encouraging the consumption of certain products or services.

In this regard, it is important to distinguish between advertising and marketing. While the latter is defined as an iterative process that encompasses the whole of a comprehensive plan, designed to create a specific image of a brand or product, whereas advertising is defined as a single action that is integrated into the final part of marketing, i.e. promotion.

Marketing, therefore, is conceived as a long-term strategy, while advertising is an activity that seeks an immediate result.

Advertising text

The advertising communicative process presents a series of peculiarities with respect to general communicative acts. In advertising texts, the sender function is usually performed by a multiple subject, which is identified with the advertising agency. These are usually staffed by specialists who are exclusively in charge of writing the texts, while other members of the team are in charge of shaping the visual component of the advertisement. In advertising, the visual component is equally or even more important than the textual component, so that in many cases, the texts act as a complementary element.

With regard to the recipient, in advertising we usually speak of a potential consumer of the advertised product, who is the main focus of the communicative process. The copywriter must always keep in mind who the message is addressed to and design the advertising strategy accordingly.

The channel of diffusion of advertising is usually closely linked to the so-called mass media, such as television, radio, newspapers, billboards and, increasingly, the Internet and social networks. In fact, digital platforms are set to become the main advertising media in the near future (if they haven’t already).

The advertising message itself, the advertisement, must have three basic characteristics to attract the viewer’s attention: it must be simple, clear and homogeneous. Therefore, the basic purpose of the advertising message is persuasive, although it is true that a discourse is created in which two main types of information, denotative and connotative, are intermingled:

  • On the one hand, the advertising text is denotative when it informs the potential consumer of what it is intended to sell, describing its most outstanding qualities and characteristics.
  • On the other, advertising is connotative when it communicates emotional aspects that aim to generate a bond with the target audience.

In relation to this, we can highlight three types of mechanisms when addressing the receiver through the advertising copy:

  • Mechanisms of motivation: they aim to surprise the recipient and provoke a sympathetic reaction towards the promoted product or service.
  • Mechanisms of recording: the objective of these mechanisms is that the transmitted message is ‘recorded’ in the receiver’s memory. This is a strategy of repetition advertising.
  • Mechanisms of persuasion: these aim to modify the receiver’s behavior with respect to the product or service being advertised, using argumentation to generate a good impression or to counteract possible negative preconceived ideas.

To activate each of these mechanisms, the copywriter must use all the resources available to them.

Functions and skills that a good copywriter must have

The concept of copywriting refers to the set of techniques and practices used to produce written advertising texts that stimulate readers to make a purchase. In this sense, the figure of the copywriter has become a key element for companies to position themselves in the market, as it is often a potential entry point to obtain new customers.

Among the main activities carried out by the copywriter are: writing and proofreading texts for advertisements, landing pages (web pages aimed at persuading visitors to perform a specific action, such as buying a product), e-mail marketing campaigns (such as newsletters or bulletins sent to subscribed customers), etc.

That said, it is worth considering what are the main skills that this copywriting professional should have. Here are some of the most significant of these skills:

Excellence in writing. The copywriter must be a true master of written communication, knowledgeable of the various resources and registers used in this type of communication, so that humanistic and linguistic profiles may be the most suitable for the performance of this work.

Imaginative capacity. People who are good storytellers have developed the ability to structure their stories in an attractive way, presenting them in such a way as to stimulate the reader’s curiosity. The priority here is that customers want to know more about the promoted product or service.

Originality. Every day there are more and more people working as copywriters, whether or not they have any training or experience. Therefore, one of the fundamental strategies to differentiate yourself in such a competitive sector is to have your own style, a unique voice for the company or service for which the texts are created.

Knowledge of the target audience. A copywriter cannot write for everyone. As a previous step to content writing, it is essential to analyze to whom we are going to address our message, developing a whole set of communicative strategies accordingly. Content is created for people with first and last names and specific circumstances (psychological, socio-cultural, registration level, etc.).

Notions of digital marketing and SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Let’s remember that the main objective of a copywriter is to create texts that attract, seduce, convince and, above all, position products or services. For this, it is essential that the professional in question is aware of concepts such as keywords, buyer persona with a semi-quantified profile of your ideal customer, CPC (cost per click), etc.
