Frankfurt Book Fair – Frankfurter Buchmesse

Every October, the world’s largest publishing event, the Frankfurt Book Fair (Frankfurter Buchmesse), is held in the German city of Frankfurt. It is a meeting of great importance for the publishing sector in the book trade, where important activities such as copyright and sales negotiations between publishers, booksellers and advertising companies take place.

The Fair takes place over five days, from Wednesday to Sunday, at the Frankfurt fairgrounds. The first three days are dedicated to the commercial part, but, come the weekend, more than 100,000 readers come to see their favorite authors and find out about the new products about to be published.

The history of the Frankfurt Book Fair

The history of the Fair dates back to the 12th century, when Frankfurt had already established itself as an important sales point for manuscript books. Later, in the 15th century, Frankfurt became a hub for the dissemination of printed books, as it was the most important city near Mainz where Johannes Gutenberg had invented the printing press. However, from the 18th century onwards, the book capital of Germany moved to Leipzig, a consequence of the important cultural development experienced by the city during the Enlightenment. In 1949, after the Second World War and the partition of Germany, Leipzig remained on the communist side of the GDR, a fact that led to Frankfurt once again becoming an international sponsor of books.

Spain: Guest of Honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2022

Spain was the Guest of Honor at the 2022 Fair, which took place between the 19th and 22nd of October. It was a unique opportunity for our country to present to the rest of the world its culture and literature, which is experiencing one of the most important moments in its recent history. At a time when Spanish literature has had to say farewell to several of its most talented authors, the Fair has dedicated an important space to pay tribute to those who are already emblematic figures of our literature, such as Javier Marías, Carlos Ruíz Zafón or Almudena Grandes.
On the other hand, a fundamental element for the Spanish promotion at the Frankfurt Fair has been the aid to the translation sector, which aims to promote the sale of rights of Spanish titles at a global level.

King Felipe VI inaugurated the Frankfurt Book Fair highlighting Spain’s devotion to printed books, despite technological advances, and praising the role of translation for its potential to transform society in the dissemination and exchange of knowledge.
